Out with the old at PSU

Say farewell to the Science and Technology building! The aging monster fell at the hands of renovators over the course of last week, resulting in todays rubble pile on SW 5th and College. It’s replacement, which bears a striking resemblance to the other half of the PSU Urban center, is supposed to be done by the end of 2008. Since I walk through the urban center and it’s environs to work and back every day it’s been fun watching the progress, but not fun dodging the constantly shifting street and sidewalk closures. It’s quite a mess, but once Tri-Met is done mucking about and the Urban Center is re-born, it should be pretty snazzy.

It seems like everyone is getting a face lift at PSU these days except for the lowly English department. (I hear they’re actually ejecting the English Department offices in order to make room for more locker rooms). Well, okay I may be a little bitter and that might be a falsehood. While I’m not a graduate of PSU I’ve taken a bunch of post bac classes there throughout the years and was usually subjected to soviet-style classrooms in the infamous and odorous Neuberger Hall. Even if my room did have windows they weren’t designed to actually open. Probably a preventative measure. God only knows the suicide rate has increased amongst English majors in the last decade.
I know I lied a little bit, but this is true–last winter I spoke with a few students currently enrolled in the MFA creative writing degree program and they were pretty convinced that PSU won’t be offering this program in the years to come. Sorry Portland, PSU seems to be saying. We don’t give a rat’s ass about your stinking fiction writers.

I had a class there a year point 5 or so ago and it was like being at my asbestos-filled high school. I pay (paid) too much to sit in a 5 hour long Grad MIS class with no power outlets for our laptops–ridiculous.

Echoing Julian, I’m pretty sure I speak for everyone that ever had a class in that building when I say, “Ya Hoo!”

I should snag a bit of rubble before they clean it all up so when I’m feeling down I can give it a bit of a kick around the room

Great photo, but could you tag/geotag it so it can be easily found?

Also, I hope TriMet is happy that there won’t be the garage entrance on the right side of the street that could conflict with trains and buses. And does any one remember what was to the north, where the Urban Center is now? This building (the “Portland Center for Advanced Technology”–PCAT) used to be used by Blue Cross (hence the color).
