Interstate not all about Chavez

With the raging debate over renaming N. Interstate going on, let’s not forget that the city is working on rezoning the entire stretch in the next few months. The city has been working on this since MAX was finished and has included local businesses and residents. This Saturday, they will present their proposal in an open house forum @ Ockley Green Middle School. Come on down and see the maps and proposals for up to 5 story buildings along Interstate and at least 1 block off Interstate. If you are a resident in Overlook, Arbor Lodge or Kenton, this will probably affect you in some way. Linkies

Does anyone get the feeling that the blocks between Interstate Ave and I-5 are the unwanted step-children of Overlook & Arbor Lodge neighborhoods?

We call it the “armpit” of Overlook. Oh and Haters, step off as I actually own a house and live in said “armpit.”

I’m hoping the rezoning will help a bit, but we’ll see.

Yeah, sure, it’ll help… if you consider staring at the ass end of a condo bunker “help”.

In all seriousness, I’m cautiously optimistic that things will get better. Like I told Bojack, they could replace every one of those roach motels with a 9 story condo bunker with a Subway and a Starbucks, and you wouldn’t here many complaints. And I hate condo bunkers, Subway and Starbucks.

Dieselboi, we might be neighbors! I also own a house in the armpit of Overlook. I’ve noticed that the Overlook Neighborhood likes to refer to us as the “transition” section of Overlook as opposed to “armpit.” Although, I suspect that definitions of both are the same.

I’m generally in favor of the re-zoning changes, and am all about high density, transit oriented developments, particularly along the Interstate MAX. So no, I am definitely not against the re-zoning, and look forward to the changes it will bring to Interstate Ave.

However, I can’t help but feel a little slighted by the neighborhood when you look at the re-zoning map and realize that our whole section of the neighborhood will be re-zoned to high density, while only 100 feet on the west side of Interstate Ave will be. There’s definitely a subtle NIMBY factor going on here, and a feeling like the west side of Overlook thinks they’re somehow better than the east side. Like they’re to good, to established, to special to absorb new residents in the neighborhood. Thus, let’s put them into the armpit, or the “transition area” as the neighborhood likes to say.

Don’t get me wrong. I know I’m totally bitching, but I LOVE Overlook! It’s my favorite neighborhood I’ve ever lived in, and I can’t wait to see the changes over the next few years. However, I think a little more balance and equitable treatment of our neighborhood’s citizens might have been in order.
