Belgian Beer Cafe - At Last!
Thanks to Food Dude for posting this…
My husband and I honeymooned in New Zealand in 2003 and went to The Occidental in Auckland, a world famous Belgian Beer Cafe. As we devoured handcut pomme frites dipped in a creamy mayonnaise sauce and a pot of mussels, while enjoying more than a few specially poured Belgian beers - each served in a special glass and on a logo coaster of the beer being poured - we talked about how well a place like this would do in Portland. A total beer snobs paradise. Traditional Belgian beers are even poured differently than your average beer - and every beer poured in The Occidental was presented to it’s fullest. We just loved everything about the place and wished that either of us has any idea how to run a restaurant because replicating that in Portland just made so much sense.
Well finally four years later, it appears now that Portland will have it’s first true Belgian beer cafe! I was pleased at the selection of Belgians (and mussels and frites - although no special mayonnaise sauce) at the Green Dragon - and that makes sense since Jim Parker is one of the men behind both - but I’m totally stoked for The Belgian Embassy to open to see if they go full blown on the Belgian style.
I am sure that Portland will love it!

There aren’t many things Atlanta has on Portland, but the fact that we’ve had our own Belgian Beer Bar (brickstorepub.com) since 2004 is one of them. Glad to see Beertown finally up to speed with the rest of us. Sheesh.
yeah, but can you ride your bike to it?
I hope the new place has Trappist beers….
now if they would only add a feather bowling alley, it’d be ideal…
