Newport - suggestions?

I am turning 30 next week. To celebrate/allow me to have a freakout in private, my wife and I are heading to the Newport area. We will be staying in a condo on the beach. I would love to hear some suggestions on things to do there. Aquarium? Restaurants? I am a huge fan of beer. Any brewpubs? Here’s your chance to get all opinionated to an Okie.

Keep in mind, the room is booked so I am not interested in hearing “OH, don’t go there…!”
Thanks in advance to all you readers!

The Aquarium is a good time. Rogue Brewing is also based in Newport. There are two Rogue outlets - the brewery and the brewpub. Each is on a different side of the bay. Go to the actual brewery (near the Aquarium). Get yourself a taster tray and stare out the huge window at the sea lions in the bay.

The lighthouse is also kinda neat.

Otherwise, just walk along the Wharf and drink Rogue beer (at the aforementioned brewpub) or scarf on some tasty clam chowder at Moe’s.

    Second the Rogue recommendation.

Also, there used to be a chocolate factory in a small collection of shops just south of the aquarium - Pegasus, maybe?

But do NOT get sucked into the Ripley’s Believe it or Not, the Wax Museum, or the Underwater Sea Museum thing. Save your money instead to buy big bottles of Rogue beer.

The Aquarium is a must see. BUT ONLY GO WHEN IT FIRST OPENS!! The glass tunnels are absolute killers when there are a couple of kids in them with you screaming about the fish.

The shops/restaurants at Nye Beach are fun…it also has nice beach access. The Chowder Bowl at Nye Beach is one of my favorites.
Marine Science Center is a nice alternative to the aquarium if you are on a budget.
If you like fresh oysters there’s an oyster farm up the bay that’s supposed to be good…according to my Dad anyway. I can’t stand them.
I have the most fun downtown Newport watching the fisherman fish off the dock next to Mo’s Annex.
Anyway…welcome to the 30’s! It’s a fun place to be.

Gator Gumbo at the Rogue is delicious!
    With a beer of course.

I agree go to the Rogue Brewpub I have a friend that works there making their Gin and the aquarium early in the morning in the middle of the week.

Let me second The Chowder Bowl at Nye Beach. If it’s on the weekend or during the rush expect to stand in the rain until you can get seated, but the food is wonderful.

You should also hit Mo’s or Mo’s Annex on the Bayfront for the other traditional fish and chips place in town.

Have dinner at the Tables of Content restaurant in Nye Beach. Food is served family style, and the quality is incredible.

My family has a tradition of having breakfast at the Chalet restaurant on 101 on the north side of town. Good and filling. And they have pie.

We like to cruise the art galleries in Old Town, and listen to the sea lions snarl at each other as they fight for position on the docks.

Definitely hit the Hatfield Marine Science Center, and maybe visit there BEFORE you see the fancy Oregon Coast Aquarium.

There’s a nice loop trail just south of town called the Mike Miller Educational Trail. It wanders through a variety of distinct coastal ecosystems in a small area.

Go to the top of Cape Perpetua. Go to the top of the Yaquina Head Lighthouse. Go beachcombing.

Newport is a great town to visit, and has become our family’s “summer home”.

Rouge is great, I love the aquarium, Pegasus moved to Bend though. Also try the Saffron Salmon for a little nicer lunch or dinner. It’s a quiet little place on the dock with a fantastic view and amazing thin little french fries

While I second the don’t, “get sucked into Ripley’s Believe it or Not, the Wax Museum…,” DO try the Japanese restaurant right in between them called Sada if you’re into sushi/ Japanese food. Mmmmm….

Make a point of having dinner at Canyon Way Bookstore & Restaurant. It’s the best food in Newport and you’ll love the decidedly un-stuffy atmosphere.

OH! Go to the Otis Cafe on the drive down there (or on the way back) - it’s on Highway 18 about four miles out from Lincoln City. They have *amazing* pie there…

Local Ocean is a fantastic restaurant on the bay front, and La Maison is probably my favorite place in the whole world to get breakfast.
