Are you prepared?
All over the airwaves and internets this morning is news that we’re getting a “MONSTER STORM” this weekend. Earlier this week, parts of the Willamette valley received their first snow. Every year, we have these weekends where we get high winds and rain and invariably, many lose power. So, my question to you is – are you prepared?
When I say “prepared,” I don’t mean having a bomb shelter with a 3 gigawatt generator and a cache of arms and enough food and supplies for a year without sun. What I am saying is – do you have a blanket in your car and maybe some power bars and water? I have the blanket, but no food nor water just in case I get stranded on a remote road for some reason. Do you have some extra canned or packaged food in the pantry in case we get an ice storm like three years ago where one could barley walk on the sidewalk? Do you have some candles and matches handy? (Note here, the cute smelly candles from the boutique are nice and all, but not practical if you need to move around the house. Look for basic pillar type candles that you can easily pick up without burning yourself.) Do you have enough beer or liquor or games to get you through the evening if the power is out and you can’t watch Tivo?
With winter on its way (only 22 days till it officially arrives,) be sure to think outside the box next time you go shopping so you are prepared if per chance the wind and rain and snow make a visit to your neck of the woods this year. Be prepared.
Ya, this sucks for reals. Looks like I am canceling our trip to Newport for my 30th b-day. Bring on the depression…..
Nope – last night we get home from work to discover that our thermostat has apparently gone kaput and we have no heat.
We’re hoping that simply replacing it tonight will solve the problem…otherwise it’s Monday before we can get someone professional out to check it out and we get to just pile on lots of blankets!
Oh – and Brewcaster – actually being on the Oregon coast during a storm is really really cool!
Don’t forget the creatures. I lived in a hurricane evacuation zone for 22 years- beer and cat food are always at the top of my list!
We just moved from Florida to get away from the kinds of winds they are forecasting!
And Kirsten is spot on. We went through 4 hurricanes, so if you think the power is going to go out, I highly recommend buying extra food for the animals (we have both beagles and cats) and out-of-the-bag snacks for yourself. I’ve also seen “oil lamps” (we called them hurricane lamps) for sale in a few places. They are great when the power dies.
I second DBWife… Watching storms on the coast is amazing. Monster waves. Just stay back a safe distance! If you’ve got a place with an ocean view, you’ve got it made. Just cuddle up with a toddy and watch the show.
OK SO ya, but the thing is we will be traveling TO the coast on Sunday. Check in at 3:00pm Sunday. Thoughts? I have until Saturday at 3:00pm to cancel, but either way I have to pay for one night :( they have a 1 week and 24hrs level cancellation policies.
You think we could make it????
Ok who has been looking in my basement?? “When I say “prepared,” I don’t mean having a bomb shelter with a 3 gigawatt generator and a cache of arms and enough food and supplies for a year without sun.” minus the generator and you called this “Do you have some extra canned or packaged food in the pantry in case we get an ice storm like three years ago where one could barley walk on the sidewalk?” an ice storm I’ve been here for 41 years you should have seen it “the ICE storms” back mid to late 70’s three to six inches of ice on every thing power lines sagging three feet to six feet it was fun back then.
Prepared? Hardly. Just bought my first hat, scarf & gloves in 20 years. My short sleeved t-shirt and hoodie didn’t seem to keep the cold at bay this afternoon.
brewcaster,
I say go for it! Just drive carefully, allow extra time to get there, and tell the hotel you are staying at that you may be checking in late. Its worth the show. And why not have a great show for your 30th birthday. Its much better than a titty bar with $10 beers.
Your biggest concern would be roads blocked by fallen trees or mudslides. Stick to the major routes through the coast range, and be prepared for delays. Take food, water, flashlights and blankets, and you’re good to go.
So, we hit up Freddy’s last night to get some tofurkey, bread, cheese, chips, paper towels and cottage cheese. Yep, we’re prepared.
I didn’t buy beer. I figured that if Stormaggedon came, the challenge would be to go find beer!
