Saturday Night Fights

Abudakar vs. Blake

Johnny doesn’t care for fighting. He told me so. —Swoozie Kurtz as Shirley Upton, Slap Shot, 1977.

It never fails: when the score gets lopsided, things fall apart. Last night at Valley Ice Arena, that’s exactly what happened when the visiting Rogue Valley Wranglers took their lumps from our home-town River City Jaguars.

The Wranglers stayed in it for the first period, scoring two goals late, making the score 3-2 Jaguars. But the Jags answered with two more quick goals, closing the period at 5-2. The second period saw two more unanswered Jaguars’ goals, and by the third period, the guys were ready to drop the gloves. First to go were River City’s James Abudakar and Tom Blake (picutured).

Sorting it out

The score blew open in the third, with a dispirited Wranglers squad eventually losing 12-2. While there may have been some hard feelings (and a few third-period ejections), there is always a sense of camaraderie in hockey. (Still, I’m with Johnny.)

The next home game for the Jaguars is Saturday, January 5 at Valley. Tickets are $7 at the door.

Bring the kids. We got entertainment for the whole family. —Andrew Duncan as Jim Carr, Slap Shot, 1977.
