U.G.L.Y…(something something) ALIBI!

Tiki Drunk
Let the blurriness of the photo be an indicator of intoxication levels.

I ride the MAX by the Alibi daily and only until recently had to wonder what magic was held inside. The Alibi is a Portland legend that promises to entertain. As odd as it seems, my wife and I having only lived here 8 months took a couple of friends from work here for their first time. They had lived here all their lives but never had ventured to the Tiki room. I feel like that is a tragedy. If the decor is not not enough for you, they feature great fluffy drinks (a decent selection of beers for me), decent bar food, and OMG the karaoke that happens here is magical. I have been to a few bars that do karaoke, but this one has been the best yet. They hold it in the back where all the tables are close together. It becomes this big party with strangers. Nobody sings unnoticed. Huge applause and yelling erupts when someone “goes for it” on notes they may or may not have range for.

+10 for also being right off the MAX line. Can I submit that we have a Metblog meetup here sometime?

Not the best karaoke venue in town, but certainly always seems to be the most supportive. Service is always friendly, food decent, drinks well poured, and the video lottery machines are mostly out of sight. This was one of the first bars I went to when I moved to Portland back in the day.

"U-G-L-Y you ain’t got no alibi, you’re just ugly
Cross my heart, hope to die, stick a needle in my eye, you’re just ugly"

There is a bar next to the Laurelhurst theatre that has excellent karaoke. Cheap drinks too. If you want nice and shitty…and by shitty I mean SHITTY karaoke go to the Doug Fir…then walk right out again, go across the street and check out The Galaxy.

If anyone out there is hunting for a karaoke-free tiki bar that’s more "chill" than the Alibi I recommend Thatch, a newish place on NE Broadway. It doesn’t have the same classic credence but the atmosphere and staff are both great.

    I L.O.V.E. the Alibi!

Although I must say that karaoke at Slim’s in St. John’s is pretty awesome in a really frightening sort of way. The crowd is super appreciative but if you think the partially blind, mentally retarded guy in the wheelchair is trying to move past you when you’re singing, don’t budge. He doesn’t want you to move – he wants to share your mic. Oh yeah – it’s that fun!
