Powell’s Does Subscription Book Club

powells-book-club.jpgIt looks like Powell’s is getting into the book club business…I noticed via an email I got from it word of the new Indiespensible subscription club. You basically pay $39.95 per shipment to Powell’s through its Web site and every six weeks you’ll get delivered “signed first editions, custom prints or creative sets” which have been picked by the book store’s staff. Powell’s is looking to give special attention to “leading independent publishers” through this club.

An added bonus – each shipment gets a little something extra thrown in like a sneak peak at another book or maybe some handmade chocolate. How cool is that? The first book is How the Dead Dream by Lydia Millet. I’ve never been a fan of random books sent to me, but I’m going to give this a try to see if I can expand my reading horizons.

Thanks for the tip. I signed up as well. The clubs-by-mail I’ve joined in the past have always ended with me swearing them off but I get the feeling Powell’s won’t let me down so easily,

I’m skeptical of this, especially at $39.95 (!?!?) per shipment. While speaking to some employees at the actual store this morning, they mentioned that the only input into this is from the Powell’s marketing department, not from the actual folks who sell/read the books.

And sneak peaks at another book? That means they are tossing worthless advanced reader copies into the shipments. Not a perk, really.

Handmade chocolate does sound good, though.
