Asshat parking job of the day
Ugh, the west side. I am such an eastsider and proud of it. Today, as part of some shopping, we had to venture west of the hills which was challenging to say the least. We even had to brave the traffic of 217 and Washington Square Mall. Luckily I wasn’t driving. I think that saved my sanity. Just as we were getting to our final destination, this asshat pulled into the parking lot and parked, running into the establishment. Even in a hurry, two parking spots? Paaalease!
The only saving grace is that amazing sky I captured with this photo. Wow!

Ugh. The Washington Square Mall. To quote Ben Kenobi – "nowhere will you find a more wretched hive of scum and villany".
My eyesight is not as good as it once was, but are those Washington plates on that car? If so, that’s a double dose of asshattery – double parking AND taking advantage of our tax-free shopping.
and seriously, those rims? come on!
Come on, they don’t want to mess up there nice rig. There is a lot of money in that car and we should all respect that.Yeah right.
washingtonian- enough said
He could only top it by parking half in the handicapable spot to the left. Nothing screams jack ass more than parking like that.
The other Washingtonian seems to know how to park (yes, I am from "that side of the river too"

Driving all that way for tax-free shopping? And how much was the gas for that gas pig getting there? Obliviots.
This is what I don’t get about Portland – how we make snap judgments about people based on their addresses, neighborhoods, license plates, whatever.
The driver was undeniably a jerk for parking that way, but does it matter that he or she was from Washington state? The people there aren’t some different brand of human – they just live on the other side of the river. When I had family in town, I rented a car from Dollar downtown and it had Washington plates…one of my neighbors saw it and said "Eww, Washington plates," as if it was contaminated or something.
And going west of the west hills is "challenging"? It’s not my favorite activity but I’ve never felt challenged by it.
I don’t think Portlanders would want to be judged by people who don’t like Portland for some reason, but they never have any trouble pigeonholing people from Vancouver, Gresham, Hillsboro, Milwaukie, Lake Oswego, you name it.
All that said – this person parked like a jerk.
Durwood, people like to feel superior to other people. Nothing more, nothing less. But ugly nonetheless.
Do you want to know why we are superior to that side of the river…one major reason…
Every day on my way home, i have to sit in traffic, it is one thing that all the traffic is going to vancouver slowing my commute. But also, soooo many washington drivers, jump over to exit lanes, rush up the rights side, slam on the brakes then cut people off. It happens over and over and over, that is a huge cause of traffic.
Also the getting off the bridge and racing through our side streets just to get back on the freeway at delta. it does no good just stay on the freeway it takes the same amount of time.
RW, it is a shame that your judgement of other people revolves around…traffic. Maybe you need to make some changes in your life.
haha that is great. Check out this one I saw on another portlander’s blog recently

Not to throw further fuel on the fire, but the pic Josh linked to appears to be the Salmon Creek park and ride up in the ‘couve. I know this because I am a former ‘couverite. My memories of that particular park and ride are not fond. Not fond at all…
I say challenging because I rarely drive – let alone in traffic. Every time we venture west, HWY 26 and 217 are a parking lot – on weekends to boot. When we venture east, it is a little less, but once out in Gresham, it is again, very trafficy.
I’m just saying that when one gets by malls and such, people drive crappy.
Is there really a west vs. east mentality?
I was at a bicycle event at W+K where various local bicycle teams were present and published their riding routes. One team, described the west side of portland as "yuppie scum, don’t go here".
Are the east side hipsters too hip for west side?
Next time you see this, gather up a bunch of shopping carts and leave them right up against that shiny paint job. You’ll be doing a public service in more ways than one.
What’s up with the west side hate? Hurt and disappointed…
Same here Ms. Blake.
The bias is bordering on illegal in some places. Doug Fir used (maybe still?) to have a $1 PBR if you had a EAST side drivers license. WEST siders had to pay extra to drink PBR.
Granted, not many people were hurt in that gimmick but the attitude is there in full effect.
I’ve lived on both sides for many many years and I find the attitude trite and immature. Portland is BOTH sides of the river. So to all of you who engage in a west vs. east mentality I salute you with my middle finger.
Right on Chris! There are obnoxious people and posers living on both sides of the river. Sorry, if the house that fit our needs and was relatively affordable happened to be on the west side. (It was built in 1923 by the way, so it’s not a mcmansion.) There are great aspects to both sides of the city. It’s time to stop the reverse snobbery.
