I moved up here from Tucson, AZ, where I had a police chopper hovering directly over my neighborhood sometimes five nights a week. It was not uncommon to see squad cars blocking off a whole grid of city blocks, choppers circling overhead with spotlights scanning for the bad guys. Sometimes these operatons would go on for over an hour. In contrast, Portland just has a small airplane with a FLIR camera, and the only time I’d heard it over my house was a few months ago when the "carjacker" ditched his ride and hid just off Alberta and 14th.

Try living in L.A. Ugh, the "ghetto birds" become part of your daily existence. (Although the "ghetto" seems to stretch about 50 miles in each direction.)

I work in the Kenton neighborhood and I gauge how rough the drive home will be by the helicopters hovering around.

Living right by Emanuel, I’ve come to find the sound of the Life Flight helicopter kinda soothing, and at least with that sound I always feel some compassion, knowing that someone’s life is in danger, even if it wakes me in the middle of the night.
The news choppers have a different sound though, the hovering is much more unnerving than the quick flyover that the medical helicopters make, and their mission, not so noble.

Well maybe if you weren’t such an epicenter of news they wouldn’t hover over you; also, have you looked on your roof? Maybe there’s a big, "HOVER HERE FOR BEST COVERAGE," tag or something…
