My wife and I are stopping over in Portland on our way to East Glacier (via Amtrak from SoCal) and looking to take advantage of this atmosphere. We're actually looking for a place to make a home. It seems like a near ideal place to call home. If anyones around for a beer, come give us the skinny on life in Portland.

Cheers.

Welcome!

I'm also a SoCal transplant (Pomona). Been here for about 15 years. People do indeed drink more here for a number of reasons:

1. The beer is better - all the tasty ingredients that make beer (water, barley, hops, yeast) come from here, and they are better than SoCal. Portland has about 30 breweries - and the vast majority of them are insanely good.

2. Portland is much more neighborhood-based than L.A. L.A. has some fine districts, don't get me wrong, but Portland is all about your neighborhood - and I'm betting that your neighborhood has a bar. Further, I'm betting that folks in your neighborhood hang out at your neighborhood bar. So, go to your neighborhood bar and get to know your neighbors!

As for sports, the only major team we have is the Trail Blazers. For those of us who think basketball is tedious, we have to make do with other sports. Me? I still love the L.A. Kings (but I understand that there won't be much local coverage of them).

Anyway, welcome! Hope to see you at the meetup!
