Take the Bike Commute Challenge
Once again, September is the month of the 2006 Bike Commute Challenge. You’ve still got a couple of weeks to dust the cobwebs off that 10-speed, pump up the tires, and take a few trial spins around the block before the big fun starts.
Why? Bicycling is good for you. Regular exercise improves your energy level, helps you lose weight, and decreases your risk for cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. And biking instead of driving saves money. If you are an employer, think about how bike commuting can help reduce stress and make happier, healthier employees. Companies that promote physical fitness tend to spend less on employee health care, and bike commuting reduces demand for parking spaces.
Is your business taking part? Check this list to find out. Or, add your company to the list. You could even become the Coordinator for your own workplace. Then, throughout September, log your bike commutes at the Bike Commute Challenge website.
Maybe you could set up a competition with a rival company in town. See which business can log the most miles ridden, or the highest percentage of employees commuting by bike. Get your fellow employees to join in and kick some butt.
Despite the occasional drama and the negative news you often hear, Portland is a very, very bike-friendly town, and never more so than during the BCC. The weather will be turning crisp, and this is a great way to kick-start a new and healthy habit. So tighten those brakes, oil that chain, and squeeze into those bike shorts. I’ll see you on the road.

My employer is listed five times in various permutations. Doesn’t sound as if there were very stringent requirements to add a listing.
