We got a heads up in the Suggest a Story box that Teardrop Lounge is going to be holding a Tiki Third Tuesday night this month. It sounds like aside from just getting the lovely goodness of a well mixed Tiki Drink you’d also be showing up for a fine lesson in Tiki history… I wish I didn’t already have pressing plans tomorrow night.

But just because I’ll be elsewhere doesn’t mean you can’t go and report back to me on the Tiki goods…

The pertinent info:
When: Tuesday, February 19 eveningish
Where: Teardrop Lounge 1015 NW Everett
Tips: It says on their site that Island Garb is welcome but not required.

If you go? Have a Zombie for me…

Yesterday we took a trip over to OMSI to see what we could see. I’ll tell you first and foremost that I’m easily entertained for hours at OMSI so it’s not like pulling teeth to get me to go, but yesterday I was especially excited to enter those big glass doors to see…

Dinosaurs.

Maybe it’s that the kid in me never quite grew up, but I was every bit as excited as my 6 year old to see the giant bones of creatures long since gone (and their animatronic brethren). While Portland has a ton in the way of sites to see our fair city has always been a bit lacking in the way of Natural History Museums for me, so I was thrilled beyond belief to stand beneath the skeletons of these giants, to watch my daughter chase their footprints, and to marvel at the fossils from enormous to tiny.

My husband was thrilled to find that they make a fairly decent cup of coffee there.

The Dinosaurs: China’s Ancient Giants exhibit is going on now through September 1st. You should stop in a take a look, and while you’re there don’t forget to check out the Submarine, and when the tour guide tells you to cover your ears, listen to him.

Why? They rock! But if that weren’t reason enough this show is a fundraiser for the Llewellyn Foundation. It’s a great time and it goes to a great cause.

Last night on the way to dinner with my family we were driving along when I noticed that the SUV ahead of me was watching TV on a little in car screen. I commented out loud that they were, just because I’m a chatty person, because my family already knows that I think too much TV is watched by kids as they sit at home on their butts. We pulled to a stop at a light behind them and I turned to answer something to my daughter when my husband said “Well I don’t think it’s the kids watching that TV”.

I looked up and stopped at the light ahead of us was the SUV with some incredibly graphic porn playing on the screen clearly visible through their back window. My parents, who are in town visiting laughed, my husband laughed and then I laughed too but only because the seat in front of my daughter blocked the up close and personal penetration scene that played out on the screen ahead.

I have to say, that screen was pretty good quality, but really, why the hell do you need to go rolling with your friends watching porn at 6:30 on a Sunday night? My kid couldn’t see into that car, but someone else’s could have. Don’t get me wrong I would have been just as, if not more, offended at the thought of my child, or any child, watching a grisly scene of violence.

But as parents it is our job to protect our children from things we find inappropriate (even if they shouldn’t be set out for all to see in the first place).

So ignoring my mother hen instincts I have this question; In a time we are already fighting to keep people off their cell phones and PDAs as they drive is their really ever a good time to watch porn while you drive? Isn’t that maybe just a little distracting?

Seeing as how we are smack dab in the middle of the holidays, shopping has become a huge past time all over Portland and my neighborhood is no exception. On Saturdays (and the Sunday before Christmas) the Sellwood Westmoreland Business Alliance presents: Decemberville.

Nearly 100 businesses in the Sellwood Westmoreland neighborhood are participating in this grand shopping bonanza. It’s a little more than just shopping though with free Pedicab rides, 20 restaurants, prizes and many of the businesses helping to raise money for deserving organizations.

If you still have some holiday shopping to do or you just have some time to wile away on a Saturday afternoon come down and check it out… And don’t miss the chance to hop into one of those bright colored pedicabs.

Want to find out about the proposed Portland-Milwaukie light rail stations? METRO is holding two open house meetings so that people can learn about the ideas from past workshops, share ideas about the proposed stations and generally find out what is going on with the project.

There’s an open house tonight in the Sellwood Middle School Cafeteria (8300 SE 15th Avenue) and another tomorrow night (Tuesday the 27th) in the OMSI Auditorium (1945 SE Water Avenue). If you’ve got an opinion on the project maybe you should pop in and share it.

Of course she isn’t old enough to stay out late and party all night (especially on a school night) so we just went for a stroll down the street to see The Bee Movie at the historic Moreland Theater.

I have to interject that one of the things I love about my neighborhood is that it has a theater that’s been open and operating for over 80 years.

We walked up to see the welcoming sign and then in the door to buy our tickets. From there it was just two steps inside to the concessions counter. For $16.25 we got two movie tickets, a medium popcorn, large lemonade and a bag of M&M’s.

Since it wasn’t quite $20 I have enough left over to get a Chai later. I may need it to stay awake as she recounts the movie to me scene by scene.
