So what do you do with three mobile home parks that sit inbetween the Nike headquarters and a Tektronics plant in Beaverton? The Sawara Property Group answered that question today by announcing their plans to evict all tenants and redevelop the land. The property groups plans include a mix of residential and commercial developments to replace the mobile home parks.

I’m kinda divided on things like this. It would be really hard if you are one of the people living in these parks. There are probably people that have been there for a long time that will be forced to leave by this time next year. On the other hand I understand how the owner of the property probably wants to make the most of their investment in the land. At least the park owners have planned a relocation fair for those that need assistance. They are also offering a nice little $5,500 check to those that can get themselves out by February. It will be interesting to see what goes up in this golden piece of land in the next few years. I have a feeling we might see some nice expensive condo’s for all those Nike folk..

I’ve been hearing talk for quite awhile about Apple’s plans to open up another store in Portland on NW 23rd street. Apparently the communities historic landmark commission didn’t like the idea forcing Apple to cancel their plans for this location. The location in question is 437 NW 23rd where a former bridal shop now sits empty.

I really don’t get why these people didn’t want Apple to move in. The obvious reason that they gave is that they didn’t like the proposed design of the building. Their plan was to tear down the ugly thing that sits there now and start over with their store. I understand how you want to keep the feel of certain hoods and not have everyone building big crazy things all around it.. But I think that NW 23rd lost that “historic” feel a long time ago. I don’t get how you let Pottery Barn, Urban Outfitters and Gap all have spots but you turn down Apple? It would have been the best part of 23rd had they let them do their thing.

Anyway, I guess it wasn’t meant to be. There is another article on this guy’s website that includes pictures and his in depth analysis of the story as well.

They really should of thought up a better nick name for Zach Randolph. Z-Do? There has got to be some more creative names out there. Anyway, I came across this interesting quote from Nate McMillan today on the Oregonian’s Blazer Blog:

“Sebastian is a Ferrari and Zach is an 18-wheeler,” McMillan said. “And that Ferrari is running while the 18-wheeler is saying, ‘Hold up.’ Even though they were two young guys and the core of our group, it really wasn’t working. We had to make a decision: build around Sebastian or build around Zach. And the decision was to build around Zach.”

I’m not sure you can really call Zach Randolph an 18 wheeler yet. If he is an 18 wheeler what does that make Shaq or Tim Duncan? Maybe he’s more like a pickup truck or something. I’m still not sure about the Blazers and their decision to build around Randolph. The guy is good but I’m not convinced that he can really lead a franchise. I’m hoping he proves me wrong though.

So there is this lady in my neighborhood that consistently rides her electric scooter in the middle of the roads.. Usually I spot her on neighborhood back roads cruising along at a pretty high speed. But occasionally I see her riding in the bike lane on busy streets like Glisan and Burnside. It always surprises me every time I see her. I guess I would just like to know how she thinks. I mean I wouldn’t be that trusting of all the Portland drivers if I was in an electric scooter in the middle of rush hour. Then again I wonder if she just thinks that no one would dare run over an old lady in a scooter…

Does anyone know what the rules of the road concerning electric scooters?

A camper in the Mt. Hood National Forest recently decided to sue the Governemt after falling off a cliff and into a creek bed. Apparently Jerry Mersereau was wandering around the forest at night trying to find a good place to relieve himself but instead he found a 30 foot drop off. To top it all off he was walking around without a flashlight..

So yeah, I guess now you get to blame the government instead of yourself for being a total douchebag? Do you expect the fed’s to go demolish all the dangerous things in the forest in an effort to make it more camper friendly? Why didn’t you have a flashlight when you decided to take the tumble?

I’m kinda anxious to see how fast this one gets dropped.

Today I ventured a little out of my comfort zone (east of 82nd) to go golfing with a friend. On our way to the course while stopped at a light a man in a car next to us rolled his window down and proceeded to ask me if I wanted to sell my car. Lets get something straight before I go any further.. I do not own a fancy car. I don’t have a big spoiler on it and it’s not a bumpin’ hoopty either.

Needless to say I was caught a little off guard by the proposal. At first I thought maybe it was someone I knew but I realized quickly that it wasn’t. My friends only comment was something like “These Gypsies drive me crazy, always trying to scam people..” I didn’t realize we had Gypsies in Portland and come to think of it I don’t even know what a Gypsy really is.. According to my friend it’s a person that is trying to make a buck at your expense.

Gypsie or not, I thought it was pretty stupid. If I wanted to sell my car there would be a freaking sign on it. Even if there was a sign on it I wouldn’t sell it to you on the corner of 102nd and Glisan while stopped at a light. I guess this incident just confirms my distaste for the outskirts of town..

I found this article on the Oregonian’s website talking about different ways people try to save a buck or two in their daily lives. It got me thinking.. What do you do to save a buck? Personally I feel like I find ways to spend rather than save. I feel like I’ve gotten that part of life down pretty well. I do know people that regularly do some pretty crazy stuff to save some money though. Maybe I feel like my time is more valuable than the effort it would take to wait in line for gas or go to the bottle return line at Fred’s.. I do find it interesting to hear what others do though. Who knows.. Maybe as I grow older I will adopt some of these practices. Here are some of my favorites from the article:

     - Using scrap paper from junk mail as printer paper..
- Washing and re-using paper towels..
- Dumping trash in the local grocery store dumpsters.

The thing thats odd to me is the people who do this are usually people that have considerable amounts of cash at their disposal. My Parents are a perfect example. They are retired and doing just fine.. Yet my Dad insists on doing whatever it takes to avoid paying a garbage bill. He reguarly finds new places to dump the trash as long as it doesn’t involve him putting a can out on the curb.. You have to pay for that! Am I missing a valuable lesson?
