Sebastian Telfair, RIP (City?)

For those who have lost interest, or simply stopped paying attention, to the NBA now that Portland is out of the running for anything other than a lottery pick, here’s the latest in marginally Blazer-related news.

Sebastian Telfair, one-time Blazer first-round draft pick and current third-string Boston Celtics PG, may not be returning to Beantown next season. Per ESPN.com, the Celtics have removed his nameplate from their locker room, thanks to a recent driving-while-suspended-with-a-concealed-handgun crime spree he recently went on in New York.

The various merits of the action by the Celtics have made interesting fodder for sports talk radio folks today, but I think that it’s clear that, after three recent gun-related incidents (the infamous “girlfriend’s gun in the pillowcase” bit here, the more-recent “Telfair getting robbed and then, perhaps coincidentally, the alleged robbers getting shot at” episode, and now this one) in the last two years, Telfair needs to get a clue. And though dismissing him is probably a little harsh, the Celtics should be applauded for sticking to their…er…guns…on this one. After all, to quote the ESPN article, “‘the players on the Celtics have been explicitly warned, this year, to obey the team and league gun prohibition as well as state laws. We take this very seriously, and will act accordingly once the facts have been determined,” Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck said Friday night.”

So, he was warned, and thems the breaks when you don’t heed the warning and your talent is marginal.

Anyway, Casey over at the O’s BlazerBlog raises the question of whether Bassy could end up back here.

Not likely, I say. Though he’s got some skills, Sebastian doesn’t seem to fit in Nate McMillan’s plans, and he certainly doesn’t fit in the new team culture being espoused by Kevin Pritchard, the team’s new GM.

That said, I’d like to hear what you think. Could Bassy be headed back to Rip City? Should Bassy be headed back to Rip City? Fans, weigh in…

I doubt it. Funny thing is I have to let it all go pretty soon though, I am moving to Los Angeles soon and you know what that means… Go Lakers!!!

Atlas, say it ain’t so! (Both the move and the impending victim, um, fanhood…)

Yes, it’s true Betsy… on both counts. I may very well likely favor the Clippers, but I can’t rule out the excitement of a Lakers game at the Staples Center. I’ll still check in here occasionally and say hello.

Thanks for your concern Betsy, I honestly expected a different response, especially with that Laker comment… furthermore thanks to all of the people who contribute to Portland MetroBlogging it’s a cool site, and part of a larger set of sites that represent the cities of our land in a refreshing and interesting way. Go MetroBlogging!!!
