MetroFi Continues Not to Impress

Sure, it’s a free service. But really, how much of a “service” is it if it doesn’t actually serve us?

Here I am, in downtown Portland, on my work laptop trying to tune in to the MetroFi power that the City continues to take such pride in.

And here’s the result:

Again, I say “Ugh.”

Yeah, just to be sure I wasn’t being a jerk, I went to MetroFi’s own website and entered my work address; yup, in the area of Salmon and Broadway, I’m 300 to 500 feet from a beacon and should be able to connect.

And then I entered my home address. I was concerned that I hadn’t seen any specific info that my neighborhood was “up.” Despite the continuous welcoming bars I see on my wireless device at home that say “MetroFi Free” next to them. And? Yup, my home is up. Within 300′ from a beacon (and, as I’ve noted previously, it’s actually on a phone pole on the other side of my neighbor’s house, no more than 100′ away). And still no love, even yesterday when I tried.

I’ve been tagged by commenters for my bitching and moaning about this free service, but I think the fact that the majority of my commenters on my MetroFi rants are experiencing the same connectivity issues as me validates my point. MetroFi is absolutely not living up to its promise, and I can’t believe the City doesn’t do something about it…

MetroFi sucks donkeys. Just because it’s free doesn’t mean it has to be bad. Look at Personal Telco. Their nodes are almost always reliable and fast.

MetroFi’s map of downtown shows a large chunk of land between SW Lincoln St. and I-405 as a “Saint Lawrence School”. Except that the school doesn’t actually exist, and the area [Google map] has been high-rise apartments/condos and a hotel since the 1960’s or so.

Nice attention to detail there, MetroFi.
