Alka-Seltzer Tag and Summer Parties

I just found out that some of my neighbors in SE are planning a block party and are in the process of getting the required permits to block off the street so we can party like crazy people. I was going to help by coming up with activities for the event. They had discussed doing three-legged races and that sort of thing, but I just ran across this on Boing Boing and we are so going to have to do it. It’s Alka-Seltzer Tag. Basically you take an Alka-Seltzer tablet and drill a hole through the middle, then string it to make a necklace. Each player wears the necklace and is armed with a squirt gun. You then divide into teams and aim to shoot your opponents tablet. When the tablets get wet they foam up and eventually fall off. The winner is the last person standing with an intact tablet. I think it’s the perfect thing for a lot of loaded people to do in the summertime. I’m sure it’s a whole lot safer than the illegal Jarts I have tucked away in my closet for barbecues. Other ideas I’ve thought of are tricycle races similar to what they did at a Chunk 666 get-together a few years ago. They raced bikes to see who could grab a doll out of a carseat first. I think tricycles might be safer since you’re closer to the ground. I was wondering if anyone had participated in something fun at a past party. It can’t involve too many rules or sharp objects. I have seen some interesting games at a rugby initiation party a few years ago, but I think most of those would be illegal on a public street. This should be a lot of fun.

Sorry about the lack of paragraphs. It didn’t look quite so blocky when I wrote it.

If your neighbors don’t already know about it (or for anyone else who doesn’t) you can get a free permit for your block party during national night out:

We were thinking about showing an outdoor movie but, frankly, probably aren’t organized enough to get it together. Still, it would be cool to block off the streets if only to enjoy streets w/out traffic for a few hours.

Mary, that is a really good idea. My apartment is butted(sp?)up against a giant cement wall, and it would be the perfect backdrop to project a movie. The question is what should we watch? It’s sort of like trying to be a DJ for a crowd where you have some sense of what your audience would like to hear but don’t know what is going to work. I’m thinking “Dead Alive” for the first movie because there is a lot going on but you can randomly walk into it and be greeted by rat monkies, flesh falling into pudding, priest on nurse zombie sex, and lawnmower destruction.

I guess my other question is what type of setup do you need to do this? Also, thanks so much for the feedback. Sometimes it feels like I’m talking into a void and the only feedback is people telling you that your spelling is wrong or you get most of your posts hanging out at a grocery store. It’s a weird thing to do this, but I kind of like the fact that people can have a forum. So there it is. Meh.

My friend gave me another suggestion for an activity. Tricycle racing to be first to drop a Mentos in a bottle of Diet Coke. Fizzy goodness!
