SOLV Retilling The Soil This Weekend

One of the nice things for me that came out of “chickening out” on the tape cleanup before the Rose Festival Parade was meeting a lot of interesting people. I’d decided to just talk to the people camped out along the parade route on MLK Friday night and see what they thought about the pre-taping/rip-up debate. One of the people I met was the gentleman pictured above on the right, Larry Collins. He’s with a community group called “People of Purpose and Associates.” He was there with a large group who were holding a tailgate barbecue and campout that night. Their group is in the process of coordinating events in NE Portland to help bring about community pride, and to help do some major cleanup in the area.

POPA, as they call themselves, is having an event this Saturday, July 7th from 9:00am – 6:00pm in coordination with SOLV to do some cleaning in NE Portland. Most people know SOLV because of the beach cleanups, but they have projects all over Oregon, including this one in Portland.

Larry is coordinating the Retilling the Soil project happening Saturday, and is encouraging people to come out and help. Their group will be working at three locations in NE Portland, and will provide bags and all the other materials needed for cleaning. Larry will be posted at Irving Park on 7th and Fremont in the morning to get people pointed in the right direction. I think the Mercury team should definitely go out and help considering their previous experience and civil-minded interests in making Portland a nicer place to live.

Larry can be reached at 503-284-6772 or you can just show up at the park and he’ll get you going. After the cleanup they’ll be holding a barbecue for the volunteers at Irving Park. It sounds like they’ll also have some music and other entertainment going on as well. I’m planning on helping out not because I’m trying to be a goody two-shoes, but because it sounds like a good cause and I need to do something other than sitting on my butt drinking beer all weekend. The exercise won’t hurt as well. I’m hoping they get a good turnout and that it’s not 100 degrees on Saturday. We’ll see how it goes.

Oops sorry, he said he’ll be there at 8:00am to start getting things set up for the afternoon barbecue and entertainment. I was trying to get more details on the actual cleanup locations but he said to just show up at the park and he’ll let me know where they need the most volunteers.
