Ladies, Step into the Rink

Upon moving to Portland, I discovered my love of the roller derby. Maybe it’s the sight of seeing women engaging in a non-traditional sporting event, or maybe it’s just the amazing players who make up the Rose City Rollers. Either way, I’m hooked and cannot wait for the opening of the 2008 season on January 26.

However, if you’re interested in playing in the league, the Rose City Rollers are looking for a few new faces to add to their “Fresh Meat” team. This is the team of new skaters who have yet to be assigned to one of the league’s four teams – the Heartless Heathers, the Break Neck Betties, the Guns ‘n’ Rollers, or the High Rollers.

On Saturday, there’s a try-out clinic happening at Oaks Park in advance of the real try-outs on Tuesday. Come with your safety equipment and start thinking about your roller derby name.

admittedly, I’m so very confused by roller derby. I get all the individual elements:
    -women in tights…check
    -roller skates…check
    -skating in a circle…check
    -beatin’ on each other…check

…but thing all together…hmmm. I guess I’ll just have to go to an event. Anyone know if this is a event that is best attended w/ 3 beers in belly?

d’oh! that’s our anniversary! wifey would kill me…or perhaps…not…hmmmmmmm. would certainly be a memorable anniversary.

What say you women married folk? Cool…or not? NOTE: I would take wifey to dinner at a fancy joint would following the event.

Yes to the 3 beers and Yes to the anniversary! What a fun night out! (unless it’s a “big one” 10 years, 25 years – where something a bit fancier would be nice.)

I floated the idea with my wife once, and it was flat-out rejected. And that was just for a regular old night out.

And this is from the same woman who has been known to choose a hockey game over the theatre for date nights.
